Fun facts
This was the first component format consisting of two separate signal systems: one for luminance (Y) and one for chroma.
The signals were recorded on the tape on separate tracks using separate heads.
"The format was called "M" due to the shape of the threading path of the tape around the helical scan video head drum, which resembles a letter M."
The format was initially designed to use ordinary VHS cassettes.
